And let’s not forget that 11 workers died in the April 20 explosion. Among the casualties was Aaron Dale Burkeen, whose body was never found and whose parents Mary and Robert Burkeen gathered with other grieving family members at a memorial ceremony for the victims on May 25 in Jackson, Mississippi. Mary Burkeen worries her son’s life and death are getting lost in the shuffle: “Our son, we’ll never get him back,” she lamented. “When they get all this cleaned up, they can have their shrimps and their turtles and everything back. But we’re never going to have our son back.”
Quite right. Would that the workers who lost their lives receive as much attention as the large-scale — but temporary — environmental damage caused by oil washing over the Gulf Coast. We would do well to remember that oil is a natural as water, and regularly seeps into the oceans naturally in quantities many times the size of the Deepwater Horizon spill. The ocean can handle the oil, but Aaron Dale Burkeen will still be gone when years from now when beachgoers are once again swimming in the pristine waters of the Gulf.
Burkeen and the others died ensuring that the rest of us have the energy we need to go about our business and pleasure, and risked their lives to bring forth the lubricant that greases the gears of our civilization. They should not be forgotten.
Wired Magazine
Wired magazine has always been an interesting and informative look at the many forms of technology impacting the way we live so it's no surprise that Wired has created a digital magazine that demonstrates just what technology can do for publishing while its stories continue to delight. And yes, Toy Story was a perfect feature for the inaugural edition.
This is why I bought my iPad.

Sometime next week Skype will unveil a new public beta product with a Group Video Calling feature that will allow users to participate in a group video chat with up to five people.
PC owners will be first to get the new multi-video chat feature, though a Mac version is expected later this year.
Group Video Calling will be free at first, but Skype has plans to bundle it with upcoming features and eventually — in three to four months time — charge for the additional functionalities.
Hibiscus Garden Circle presented a grant to R.B. Hunt School's first grade teacher Jeffie Bennett to fund a bulb planting project.
"She and her students experimented (by) pre-chilling some bulbs and just planting others," Lois Hannabury-Dano said in an e-mail.
As a native of St. Augustine, the Castillo de San Marcos is part of my everyday life. I can't drive through the downtown area without seeing it. This fort has stood - undefeated - for more than 300 years and is the one place you MUST SEE when you visit our city. We spent two delightful afternoons here last week while our grandchildren were visiting (your ticket is good for seven days). On the first trip we took the tour and learned all about the fort's architecture and its history. We also learned that the cannon firing demonstrations only happen on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this time of year so, of course we had to go back for that!
I'll be back again in July if not before. The fort green is one of the best spots to watch Independence Day fireworks.
