Frontier fort from Revolutionary War found in Georgia

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Less than two months after British forces captured Savannah in December 1778, patriot militiamen scored a rare Revolutionary War victory in Georgia after a short but violent gunbattle forced British loyalists to abandon a small fort built on a frontiersman’s cattle farm.

More than 234 years later, archaeologists say they’ve pinpointed the location of Carr’s Fort in northeastern Georgia after a search with metal detectors covering more than 4 square miles turned up musket balls and rifle parts as well as horse shoes and old frying pans.

This AP story by Russ Bynum recounts the story of Carr's Fort in northeast Georgia and its recent discovery. Read the whole story at St.Augustine.com.

Okefenokee Swamp

The Okefenokee Swamp is a huge peat bog covering much of south Georgia and spilling over a bit into north Florida. It is the source for both the Suwanee River on the west and the St. Marys River on the east. The name "Okefenokee" means land of the trembling earth, because many of the islands in the swamp are large clumps of floating peat.

Winter is the best time to visit the swamp - especially if you don't want to deal with its more onerous inhabitants - bugs and gators. There is the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and the Stephen Foster State Park along with several other attractions to capture your interest.

The Jekyll Island Club

Between 1888 and 1942, the Jekyll Island Club served as the winter playground for an exclusive group of this country's richest men. A new historical novel, Splendid Isolation: The Jekyll Island Millionaires' Club 1888-1942 by Pamela Bauer Mueller, tells the story from the perspective of the people who worked for the club and its members. Her history is spot on and her characters are the actual people involved. It's a fascinating history and a great story.

The Jekyll Island Club has been restored and is now open to all. This photo was taken in the fall of 2004 when we attended a wedding in one of the millionaire's "cottages".
